Chilled iron grit is a strong abrasive that can be used for etching but is less impact resistant. During the blasting process, cold iron splits at an angle, resulting in a persistent mixture of sharp grit that may roughen up the toughest surfaces and clean them rapidly. It's fine for cleaning and edging in blast rooms, but it shouldn't be used in wheel blast machines since it quickly wears out the machine's parts.
Chilled Iron Grits (C.I. Grits) are angular grits with a white structure formed from cast iron scrap or pig iron with a carbon content of 1.7 to 3.5 percent and hardness of more than 750 HV / 63 RC. These are commonly used for foundry cleaning, sand removal in castings, air blast applications, removing old coatings, cleaning of castings and metallurgical materials, stone blasting, and stone cutting. These can also be used to etch structural steel and components before applying paint, metal spray, or plastics. Chilled iron grit is suitable for compressed air blasting in blast rooms with proper recycling and dust-extraction equipment.
Because of its high carbide content, chilled iron grit is not burn-sensitive and has a high specific grinding energy. Because its hardness is around 50 HRc, the maximum surface roughness generated on the machine is 0.5 m, a common structural bonding method is used, which is normally between 23 and 27 percent of the wheel volume.
The grain content is typically 50 percent, and wheel speeds can reach 120 meters per second. To conclude, a cleaning station includes a trash screen, a storage sand blasting machine, a metering device for supplying a controlled flow of abrasive, and an air-wash classifier for removing dust and particles.
